For starters, it is the only state park in Minnesota where the rare and federally-endangered Minnesota Dwarf Trout Lily grows and easily is seen each spring from the park’s boardwalk.

-Wildflower Ambassador volunteers are on the boardwalk during spring weekends to share information about the Dwarf Trout Lily, point out the many other blooming wildflowers, and help provide visitors with an exceptional wildflower viewing experience.

One of the largest population densities of Red Headed Woodpeckers in Minnesota, up to 20 individual birds, can be found around the Maple, Basswood, and Ironwood trails. That said, it is very common to view a wide variety of birds in the picnic grounds.

-Friends can assist the Park Naturalist in observing and reporting population updates.
